맥아더 장군의 아들을 위한 기도     오 주여, 제 아이를 이런 사람으로 키워 주소서. 자신이 약할 때 이를 분별할 정도로 강하고 두려울 때 자신과 맞설 만큼 용감하고 정직한 패배에 부끄러워 하지 않고 의연하며 승리에 겸손하고 온유할 수 있는 사람이 되게 하소서.   소망이 실천을 대신하지 않는 사람으로 키워 주소서. 주님을 알고 또한 자신을 아는 것이 지식의 초석임을 아는 아이가 되게 하소서.   바라오니, 그를 평탄하고 안이한 길로 인도하지 마시고 고난과 도전의 시련과 자극에 직면하는 길로 인도하소서. 그리하여 폭풍우에 맞서 용감히 싸울 줄 알고 패자를 가엾게 여길 줄 알게 하소서.   마음이 깨끗하고 높은 이상을 갖게 하시어, 남을 지배하려 하기 전에 먼저 자신을 다스릴 줄 알고 웃을 줄 알면서도 우는 법을 결코 잊지 않게 하시고 미래를 내다보는 동시에 과거를 잊지 않는 아이로 키워 주소서.   바라오니, 이 모든 것을 다 이루어 주신 다음 그에 더하여 넉넉한 유머감각을 갖게 하소서. 그리하여 늘 진지함을 잃지 않으면서도 지나치게 심각한 사람이 되지 않게 하소서.   그에게 겸손한 마음을 갖게 하시어 참으로 위대한 것은 소박함에 있음을 알게 하시고 참된 지혜는 열린 마음에 있으며 참된 힘은 온유함에 있음을 명심하게 하소서.     그 애가 이런 사람이 되었을 때, 아비된 제가 감히 그에게 속삭일 것입니다. Here let him learn to stand up in the storm; here let him learn compassion for those who fail.   Build me a son whose heart will be clear, whose goal will be high; a son who will master himself before he seeks to master other men; one who will learn to laugh, yet never forget how to weep; one who will reach into the future, yet never forget the past.   And after all these things are his, add, I pray, enough of a sense of humor, so that he may always be serious, yet never take himself too seriously.   Give him humility, so that he may always remember the simplicity of true greatness, the open mind of true wisdom, the meekness of true strength.
